Hold that sun!

I knew self publishing was going to be hard work before I jumped into it but I was suprised to find out how hard it really is.

One of the biggest things is doing it all by one self, producing a comics takes a long time and thats not including marketing your work.

The next time I tag the sun I'm going to need to hold it still for a while so I have hours in the day to do everything I need done.

out with the old in with the new...ok I know it's not the new year yet

Well I've been working on finishing up Brer Warrior issue 2 during the day and at night I have been working on the next Graffit On The Sun title.

right now I'm finishing up the part of Brer Warrior issue 2 that I find to actually be the work...ie stuff that need to get done but you sometimes rather be doing something else while the new project I'm starting to do the fun part (the writing and soon drawing) of making comics (at least to me)

But with that said I am happy that soon you should be able to order a copy of Brer Warrior #2.

trying to get better at marketing and previews

I have to admit I made a lot of mistakes working on the first issue of Brer Warrior and working (and getting ready to promote) the second issue I hope I learned enough from mistakes to do a better job. Though I am sure I will still make some mistakes (hopefully different ones that I will learn from)

of course somethings I'm not sure if they where mistakes or not.

For example for Brer Warrior #1 I put up over half the book on this site for people to preview. I wonder if people liked it or not. how many of you bought the book reading those previews. How many didn't buy the book because of them and how many are still on the fence.

should I do the same for the next issue, if show should I do it in the same format (a page a week) or a new format.

Brer Warrior issue one preview up on scribd

I just placed the 13 page preview of Brer Warrior #1 on scribd.com. It's the stuff I already placed on this site but instead over a nunmber of blog post it's in one easy to read format.

you can check it out here

I would have embeded the doc but that function wasn't working for me.

I'll see if I can do it later

sometimes you just have to keep on going

I new the comic book market was small way before I published my first book and the fact that I only have a shoe string budget to promote my work I was expecting huge sales.

But even knowing that the sales still manage to be much lower then I thought they would be.

low enough that I am sure most people would throw in the towel.

But this is what I want to do and so I can't see giving up on comics even if I have yet reach my market. Because I'm happy just getting stuff out. Of course I hope to be able to make a living off of this some day. But right now that's not happening (but it will soon I am sure)

But where it's easy to say that I should do something else I can't see doing that (even if I just keep doing this on the side)

I've been thinking if I should keep on doing Brer Warrior or do something else. I think I may take a break and work on something else. Of course I thought I would be alternating between two titles (brer warrior and something else) when I was still working on the first issue of Brer Warrior but instead of working on that project I decided to do Brer Warrior issue 2. So well see if that will happen again or will I actually pop off on of the many other ideals I have jotted down or that's flying around in my head.

But I'm still working on the second of Brer Warrior so well see when I wrap up. with that.

Issue 2 of Brer Warrior will be delayed about a month. See last month my water heated busted. It took be this long to a. get the basement cleaned up so there room to bring a new water heater down and put it in b. pay for the heater and c. set up a day that works for the guy putting in the heater.

since the water heater was broken (and spraying water) I had my water shut off and I was crashing at my brother's place. The art for Brer Warrior issue two is at my computer at home and during the month I was staying at my little brother's and his family's pad I hadn't had much time to work on the art.

I'm now working on all the fixes, inks I need to on the art for the comic.

between this and my computer getting a virus there have been some big road blocks getting this issue out. Hopefully I wont get any bad news that will keep me form working on it (of course if something really good happens that takes my time i guess that's ok)

2 kilo dekka, unfinished art from an unfinished project that probably wont see the light of day

Earlier in the year I had an ideal for a one shot that basically was tied into the year 2010. I put it to the side to work on other things thinking I'll come back to it. But I didn't and I don't think I have enough time to go back to it and have it out before the end of the year (why have a comic about 2010 come out a year later) and honestly if I did I have other things I would rather work on instead.

So the project is dead. But I thought since I have a few pages already drawn I'd share them with you. They are just some unfinished pencil drawings. if I find the script I'll post up the dialogue later (though I remember one of the jokes is already outdated and the year's not even over)

The last two comics had to do with the year of the tiger I guess I could save them for the next year of the tiger. Well the the last one was a character that's a metal tiger so I'd have to wait until the next year of the tiger where the element is metal which would probable be in about 120 years, which is a pretty long wait. Come back in 2130 to see if that character you see is used again.

and to run with the theme of 2010, there is a reason why I picked this time of day to post this. Can you guess what it is?

hmm maybe i should think of type of no-prize to send someone that gives me an answer.

Happy UN interanational day of Peace

In order to help promote world peace here is a sneak peak at the cover for Brer Warrior issue 2. No really this is to promote peace, I know a few small countries that have gone to war over waiting for the next issue and Hilary Clinton told me that sharing news of the next issue of Brer Warrior will help the talks for a peace treaty between Palestine & Israel...ok maybe not but here's it is any way

Hope that calmed everyone's warring nature down, until the next issue hits.

Peace Out everyone

Brer Warrior Issue 1 altcopy edition

It's out the altcopy edition of Brer Warrior Issue one, on sale now at indyplant.com

What is it, the first issue of Brer Warrior with a new sleek cover (and a couple of small minor changes)

But it's pretty much the same comic for the same low price of $2.35

This cover (pictured above) is a different take on covers then most standard comic book covers. Most comic covers are usually an image, that hopefully entices you to buy the comic and maybe (though less often nowadays) this image tells you what the story is about. But this cover is done with a few images from the comic and taglines that give you an ideal about the content in this issue. I see the cover as been done in a style that you may see on ad.

In fact the video I made earlier to promote Brer Warrior issue one is based on this cover and uses the same images and tag-lines, just with voice over and motion.

Brer Warrior issue 1 ad

Well here it is the ad for Brer Warrior issue 1, I talked about last night.

I thought it was a good first effort... and yes that voice over guy is me doing my best movie announcer voice.

Sunday, September 12, 2010

This weekend I went back to the beginning

This weekend I worked on a new cover for the first issue of Brer Warrior and I worked on a little ad for the comic both will be up shortly.

and of course I'm also working on the second issue.

Thursday, September 2, 2010

and I'm back

Got my computer fixed.

Right now I'm finishing up an ad I was working on before I had to get my PC fixed.

I have to say the timing was actually pretty good because I'm actually almost done with inking the second issue of Brer Warrior. Or I guess I should say inking the actual pages since I do more touch ups and inking on my computer.

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Back on track

Got 2 pages of art done the other day, which is real good.

I should be done with the penciling of brer warrior #2 by the of the week.

Sadly my computer is still broken so i don't know when i'll get chance to scan it after I ink the pages. Hopefully the computer will be fixed soon.

Doubt and the effects on output

After nearly a month of turning out days of art the last few i've notice my rate drop. It's one of those things I guess.

Actually now that I think about it no, I've notice my out but went down after talking to cousin about running this comic company. You see one thing people feel the need to say is how there is no money in comics.,.and believe I know. This was one of those times but my cuz added more of a guilt trip on it.
Which lead me to doubt myself and doing so seemed to put out my artistic fire.

This is something I thought about righting before since it happened to me before during after the first issue of Brer Warrior. Heck it's part of the reason I didn't start working one the 2nd issue right away.

Well I'm going to rekindle my fire so i can go back to turning out a steady stream of art.

being more open

I've been thinking that I should start being more open and start talking about what's going on behind the scenes. What I'm thinking as i produce great works (hey stop laughing)

so that what I'm going to start doing more of...later to day...see you at noon (est)

typing this update on a wii

hi.

I know i haven't been posting many updates on the 2nd issue brer warrior. that because i took a little bit of time to try and promote the 1st issue and i was working on some other things.

add to the fact that i did start the next issue right away 2 weeks ago my computer got sick. that's right a virus. i'm only able to write this post because i'm using my brother's wii (thanks Jevon)

anyway i don't how long it will take to fix the computer. hopefully it be fixed because i don't have the cash for a new one.

oddly because i can't us it, i've had more time to work on the art. issue 2 is going 2b lightyears better then the first. i just wish i could show you a few scans. hopefully i will be able to soon

don't worry the preview of the 1st issue will still be posted here, since i've had them to go out every saturday at 2:35 am, against long time ago,

thanks everyone and please tell a friend about graffiti on the sun, heck tell a foe or a stranger.

Brer Warrior #1 now only $2.35

that right the first issue of Brer Warrior is now only $2.35.

Wait you say that was always the price of Brer Warrior and the the answer is true...expect for some reason there was a hiccup (ie I think I throw them off with an odd price point) and Comic Monkey and the retail price was listed as $2.50 for retailers.

But that's been fixed and now comic stores can order the comic at it's correct price (and correct retailer discount)

Thursday, July 15, 2010

just a litte bit of news about what I'm working on right now

Finished the script for the main story for Brer Warrior issue 2 and started working on the art for the comic.

I learned a lot from putting out the first issue and I hope that I learned enough that issue 2 will be an even better comic.

Press Release for the 1st issue of Brer Warrior

June 21st 2010 (Pontiac, MI) - Comic book publisher Graffiti On The Sun tags a new dawn over the comic book industry with the release of companies print comic Brer Warrior issue 1.

The comic book series Brer Warrior is loosely based on the folktales of Brer Rabbit. However, Brer Warrior takes what we know about Brer Rabbit stories and infuses them with a mix of pulse pounding kung-fu action, a bit of Science Fiction a street edge and even a bit of social commentary. Giving us not only a fresh take on the character but is the beginning of the beams of new light that Graffiti On The Sun will shine on the comic industry.

“Brer Rabbit was a character that I loved as a kid.” Says Brer Warrior’s creator Martin Jackson. “When I decided to start my comic book company I knew Brer Warrior was a tale I needed to tell.”

Brer Warrior is set in a land of anthropomorphic animal that’s been taken over by a mysteries group of aliens. Life under the rule of these aliens is miserable. Some animals have started to fight back, some niche out position of powers, and some even turn to lives of crime and substance abuse to get by. Brer Warrior is a gifted martial artist who is pretty much wanted by all sides. Will he defend the land and free the animals? Will he side with powers that be or will he fall to a life of crime?

Brer Warrior Issue 1 is on sale right now and can be bought at

IndyPlanet.com (http://www.indyplanet.com/index.php?id=3849)

And retailers can order copies at comicsmonkey.com (http://www.comicsmonkey.com/index.php?id=3849)

“As a new artist I can understand where people will be unwilling to try unknown talent even at a low cover price, so I’m posting one page previews of Brer Warrior issue every week http://graffiti-on-the-sun.blogspot.com starting June 26 2010, to allow people to see what’s in the book.” States Mr. Jackson.

Graffiti On The Sun presents a completely random often poorly drawn kinda shorta maybe sometimes funny comic strip and by funny we are not sure if the

Yesterday I meantioned that Amazon didn't except the name of my short little ebook because they thought I didn't put in the name.

Well that is all fixed and I am happy to say that Graffiti On The Sun presents a completely random often poorly drawn kinda shorta maybe sometimes funny comic strip and by funny we are not sure if they mean funny as in humors or funny as in odd or strange 99 cent ebook thingy can now be bought on the Kindle (and all Kindle apps)

It's a small collection of 8 1 panel comics that I drew over the weekend, The title is truthful because the art is poor (I drew the comics quick most of the time I spent on this was actually thinking of jokes and formatting it for the ebook)

That's right I'm telling you this book is a bit crappy, at least the art.

Humor is subjective so it's hard to say if you will find this stuff funny or not.

also I think you should know that in a week or so I will put all the comics up online (on it's own site/blog) and you can read the comics for free if you don't want to waste .99 but there a few extras in the book you can only read in the kindle book (but honestly you probably won't care about reading a few sophomoric jokes in poem form)

man I am very down on what is actually Graffiti On the Sun's first release (even though Brer Warrior is going to be this companies first print comic) but the truth is mostly a test (that for some odd reason I decided to make long runny webcomic which work I plan on rushing while I spend most of my time actually focusing on other projects)

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

name to long for Amazon?

Hmmmm is there a limit to how long a title can be on amazon?

Because I submitted a very short little ebook to be sold on the kindle and they seem to think that there is no way that title can be real.

Sunday, June 13, 2010

now that I have my first comic i am moving on the some new things.

Well I started scripting the second issue of Brer Warrior. I've also started on working on a quickly done poorly drawn webcomics that I will be posting on the this site.

Fresh New Look

I redesigned the site.

I hope you like this blog's new look.

I honestly was thinking about changing the look of the site but it just happened that blogger introduced new stuff and I was able to come up with something I like using the stuff they have.

Though I may had a few things later on.

geeking over proofs

Looking over the proofs for the first issue of Brer Warrior.

I'm geeking with excitement over the fact that soon my first comic will be out for the world to buy.

2am corrections oh and ka-blam is great

I have to say Ka-Blam has great service.

I messed up on the dimensions of my files (a big goof on my part) but they where quick to contact me and gave me the right dimensions and even though it was my mistake they where very nice toward me.

also there response time was rather quick.

I just finished up correction everything. sent them the files and since it's past 2 am here I'm going to bed.

nighty night every one.

actually I guess I should say good morning since it's been a new day for 2 hours.

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

arrgh!!!

I've learned a lot of things working on this comic.

And a big reason why I learned stuff was because I made mistakes that needed to be fixed.

Just when I thought I was done I found out I missed up on my formatting of the comic.

So you'll have to wait a bit for the release of Brer Warrior 1 as I go and fix my mistakes.

blam! when pricing hits you

Comic prices have gotten really high recently. Odds are if you are reading this you are a fan of comics and already know that.

$4 bucks for an issue of your favorite comic

Because of the high prices I want to make sure that Brer Warrior has a low price point, so you don't have to rob a bank to read a comic.

I may have priced it too low and odds are because of that you will only be able to get it online. we'll see.

That's right Brer Warrior issue 1 is priced so low it's illegal.

ok maybe not illegal

Brer Warrior issue one sent to the printers...now what?

I just sent the first issue of Brer Warrior to the printer.

It's odd I'm happy that I finished the first issue but I've been working on this issue for so long that I have this oddly sad feeling wondering what should I do next. Even though I still have many things to do in relation to this comic (and life in general)

I guess it feels out not opening up gimp and to work on the art

Maybe that's it I'm feeling a bit of artist twitch...I need to draw something.

2 kilo deka

Early in the year I decided to make a comic called 2 kilo deka. I hoped to get it done near the beginning to cash in on the question "what do we call this decade?" And I hoped to had 2 kilo deka as the new lexicon for 2010.

But since it's the year is half over and

1. I got busy working on other stuff
and
2. I looked at some of the jokes I wrote the the comic and even though they where written this year some already seem old and dated.

so instead of putting out a print comic I'll post some comics here. Some will be quick, like the comic below and is just pencils and no inking.

About the company name

So a few days after I registered my business my mother asked me why did I name my company Graffiti On The Sun. I told her the reason but I realize that some of you may be wondering the same thing so I decided I'll finally tell you.

If you look back far enough you will notice that this blog didn't start out as a comic book company but as my graphic design portfolio. When I was trying to come up with a name for my portfolio that sound better then just Martin Jackson's Portfolio the name Graffiti On The Sun popped into my head and I thought it sounded nice.

After I thought about for a little bit I realize that not only did it sound cool but it's one of those things that you could easily throw meaning behind. I can see it mean reaching for great heights. I mean you have to get pretty high to spray paint the sun.

And because of that I thought it was a great name.

Later on I finally decided to follow my long time dream and start a comic book company. But I needed a name. Once again going with just my name. This time not only because it seems dull but it would probably make it seem like I have a big ego. So I thought about it and came up with another name. But not Graffiti On The Sun.

So with this other name I created a blog and used it to talk about comics. Then in April when I decided to official start my company I realize I didn't care much for the name for a company (though it was great for a comic blog) and decided it best to go with a different name.

Then Graffiti On The Sun popped back into my head. At first I didn't want to use it because I was already using it for my graphic design blog. But I couldn't shake it, the more I tried to come up with another name the more I realize how perfect Graffiti on The Sun is for my comics.

So I went with it.

That's the story it's a simple (or deep depending on your view) as that.

Ya another Brer Warrior preview art drop. WHAT!

Posted above is the page I finished last night/earlier this morning.

Brer Warrior is on track to come out real soon. I'm a bit behind my schedule but even though the past week has been hectic for me I've oddly managed to put out stuff at a decent rate.

I know I know it's all inside baseball and many of you don't really care and may just be wondering when the first issue drops...but as I said the first issue of the Brer Warrior comic will be out really soon.

peace and love.
